From
“America’s Wild Rivers Coast” to the “Heart of the Dunes,” here’s an unspoiled
coastal experience filled with windsurfing, fishing, and exploring the most accessible
and spectacular beaches in Oregon.
AMERICA’S WILD RIVERS COAST -
Starting with the Trees of Mystery in California and reaching North to Port Orford.
America’s Wild Rivers Coast offers 101 miles of nature’s best. As you travel along
historic Highway 101, you’ll not only discover some of the most spectacular shoreline
and best beach access in Oregon, you’ll also glimpse towering forests and have
the opportunity to view some of the last remaining wild rivers in America. Fabulous
fishing, hiking and exploring can be found in almost every city.
BROOKINGS
- Because of its superior weather and recreational opportunities, Brookings is
a well-known vacation and retirement area. The spectacular Salmon Run Golf Course
is making the area also popular with golfers, but the area is still best known
for fishing.
Boat charters can be found in Brookings Harbor for ocean fishing.
The nearby Smith River, along with the Chetco, Pistol, and to the north the Rogue,
Elk and Sixes rivers also offer outstanding fishing.
GOLD
BEACH - Next stop on the Wild Rivers Coast is the oceanfront community
of Gold Beach, where the famous Rogue River meets the spectacular Pacific. Ocean
vistas abound with many hiking trails and the best beach access along the Wild
Rivers Coast.
From May through October, jetboats offer excursions up into
the “wild and scenic” sections of the Rogue giving passengers a close up view
of wildlife and river life. The salmon and steelhead fishing in the area is second
to none, and an excellent group of licensed guides are available. Ocean charters
for fishing and sightseeing are ready for your call.
Gold Beach offers
one of the best selection of motels with oceanfront or river views. A variety
of restaurants with varied dining to please every appetite are also located in
town. A brand-new Visitor Center just south of town (located on Highway 101) has
complete area information.
PORT
ORFORD - Historic Port Orford is the oldest townsite on the Oregon coast
and is the northern gateway to America’s Wild Rivers Coast. The area is steeped
in history, recreational opportunities and scenery. With the only open water port
in 600 miles and two wild rivers, commercial and sport fishing, diving, windsurfing,
and beachcombing opportunities are plentiful.
Port
Orford is also one of the best whale watching spots on the Oregon coast. Several
parks, including Humbug Mountain State Park, offer excellent camping. Port Orford
Head State Park, originally an active Coast Guard station, is now a day use historical
park. Tours of the Cape Blanco lighthouse and historic Hughes House are well worth
the time.
BANDON-BY-THE-SEA
- Next stop heading north is charming Bandon-By-The-Sea. Many visitors consider
Bandon the hidden pearl of the Southern Oregon Coast. Its quaint Old Town is a
shopper’s delight with unique art galleries and shops. Go crabbing and fishing
right from the waterfront.
Several motels and bed & breakfast inns offer
beach views. The town also offers a good selection of seafood restaurants. Just
south of Bandon is West Coast Game Park Safari, a great family attraction. And
world-renowned Bandon Dunes, a spectacular golf course resort, has golfers from
around the world flying into this corner of Southern Oregon.
